Açaí é o fruto do açaizeiro (Euterpe oleracea). Também chamado de juçara, o mesmo é uma das mais importantes fontes de alimentação para os habitantes da região Amazônica, terra de origem do açaí. A fruta também é encontrada em outros países próximos do Brasil, como Venezuela, Colômbia, Equador e Guianas. O açaizeiro é uma árvore que pode chegar a atingir até 30 metros de altura e que prefere áreas úmidas, fato que faz com que a mesma cresça nas margens dos rios.

O açaí é uma pequena fruta arredondada, de coloração escura, variando entre o roxo e o preto, que possui um pequeno caroço e pouca polpa. O fruto é encontrado em cachos; cada tronco do açaizeiro produz até quatro cachos da fruta.
Os efeitos benéficos do açaí para a saúde são vários. A fruta é rica em vitaminas do complexo B, C, além de ter muitos sais minerais, como o ferro, cálcio e potássio. O açaí também é rico em antocianinas, substâncias responsáveis pela circulação sanguínea. Se comparada com outras frutas, o açaí é muito mais calórico: cada 100 gramas têm, em média, 160 calorias. Dessa forma, o mesmo deve ser consumido com moderação.
Para ser apreciado, é necessário que o açaí seja amassado. Assim, sua polpa é retirada e misturada na água, originando o chamado “vinho do açaí”. A fruta é empregada no preparo de bebidas, doces, sorvetes e geléias. O fruto da Amazônia conquistou paladares em várias regiões do Brasil. O açaí na tigela, como é chamado, é a forma mais comum de consumo da fruta: a polpa do açaí congelada é batida com xarope de guaraná, originando uma pasta semelhante ao sorvete.
O Brasil é o grande produtor mundial de açaí, responsável por 85% da oferta mundial.
